Our journey started at the Daugavpils Traditions House, where we were introduced to Latgalian daily life and traditions, learned how farmsteads looked in the past, and discovered a surprising historical fact: if a girl could shear a sheep’s head, she was considered ready for marriage—regardless of her age. And we interviewed Lāsma Kumpiņa.After lunch, we continued to Krāslava, visiting Krāslava Palace and the exhibition “In the Code of Wood”. There we explored how wood was traditionally used in Latgale’s architecture and how it evolved over time, interviewed Baiba Pankjāne, and discovered the rich culinary heritage of the region—Jewish, Belarusian, Russian, Polish and Latgalian. Through old kitchenware and interactive activities, we also discovered traditional Latgalian recipes, including kļockas, one of the region’s classic dishes. 🍽️
"Latgolas Lizeika" is a European Solidarity Corps Project. Its main goal is to promote the preservation and popularization of the Latgalian language and culture among young people by using digital tools and an interactive learning platform. We aim to create an innovative and accessible way for young people to explore Latgalian culture, language, and traditions while simultaneously developing their digital and creative skills.
